“Martina Schiestl studied Biology at the University of Innsbruck (Austria) and got her Masters degree in 'Behaviour, Neurobiology and Cognition' at the University of Vienna (Austria). At the moment, she is studying to become a Veterinarian at the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno (Czech Republic). Over the last decade she has worked as research coordinator, lab manager & animal trainer for a number of Universities around the world. She also worked as biology teacher, research assistant and animal keeper, dedicating her life to education, animals, animal welfare and science.

She began her journey working for the Waldrapp-ibis reintroduction and conservation project, where in order to teach the birds their migration route, they trained them to fly after them while they were in a paraplane. Since her first experiences in science she has a big focus on training animals for research, as she believes animals in our care and especially research animals deserve more attention and the best life possible. She has been working for different Universities and research facilities all over the world and has experience in managing, training and running scientific studies with a variety of species including birds, monkeys, cows, sheep, pigs, dogs, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Martina is regularly invited to speak at animal training, welfare & research workshops. She has also published and co-published peer-reviewed papers and presented her work at international conferences.

Her life and work with animals is best represented by her two most favourite citations: ‘Training should not mean breaking their fragile hearts.’ (Mark Bekoff) ‘Our prime purpose in this life is to help others, and if you cannot help them, at least do not hurt them.’ (Dalai Lama)”
